Forgiveness

Through forgiveness the arms of Jesus lift you, His blood cleanses you, and His love changes you.  It is His free gift to you.  Turn your heart toward Jesus.  Pray to receive Him and His forgiveness by faith today.  He will come into your heart and make all things new.

Bible Finance

An interesting article appeared in the daily newspaper recently about financial advice taken from the Bible.  It was written by Jennifer Garza associated with Scripps Howard News Service and titled “Bible’s financial advice gains favor”.  Following are a few bullets from the article:

  >  “Before David and Maura Reza handout the $5 weekly allowance to their children, David reads a Scripture from the Bible about money.”

  >  “The important thing to remember is that all of this said David Reza, opening his arms wide gesturing to everything in their house, belongs to God.”

  >     “How we manage our money says a lot about how we feel about God, said Mark Eshoff, executive minister at Fremont Presbyterian Church…”  (in Sacramento, CA)

  >     “Money is mentioned more than 2,300 times in the Bible, more than any other topic, including the oft-cited Proverbs 22:7, The rich rules over the poor and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.”  (Quoted by Pamela Christensen of Crown Financial Ministries.)

The article centers on financial education being taught in a lot of churches.  One course being taught is the Dave Ramsey approach to finance.  Ramsey is a radio talk show host who tells listeners they should be debt-free.

An opposing view was presented as follows:  “Dave Ramsey creates this Mayberry world, but this is a much more sophisticated society, said Robert Manning, professor of consumer finance at Rochester Institute of Technology and author of “Credit Card Nation:  The Consequences of America’s Addiction to Credit”.  Manning praised churches for promoting financial education but cautioned that religious groups also are acting out of self-interest.  If these people are in debt, they can’t tithe, and that means the church feels it, he said.  These programs teach that you should tithe first.”

I have not read Mr. Manning’s book, but from his quote, he obviously is not knowledgeable about Biblical teachings.  The programs teach that you should tithe first because that is what the Bible says to do, no matter how large or small your tithe is based upon your income.

Overall, the article was pretty positive, refreshing in the normal flooding of negativity usually found in our daily newspapers.  What do you think?

Me Worry!

Worry is not worthy...of anything.  Not one worry will change the outcome of any situation.  Having concern and paying attention to situations is often important, but not to worry over them.  Worry causes sickness and disease, and often creates even more frustration.  In the book of Matthew, 9 verses are dedicated to the subject of worry.  (Matthew chapter 6 verses 25-34)   God takes care of the birds and flowers and provides all their needs.  How much more important to Him are you.  He will take care of you if only you let Him.  We have this "need" to take care of everything on our own, without God's help.  But he wants to!  If only we let Him.  Learn the lesson of worry in Matthew chapter 6.  It's worth the reading.

"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?"  Matthew 6:27  NIV

Ecclesiastes 5:10

"Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income.  This too is meaningless."

Yeah, I know, not a Proverb, but filled with wisdom all the same.  Let us keep our priorities in the correct order.  A worthy prayer is for wisdom to manage our money properly and not let it become our god.

Bucket Filling

I recently was intrigued by an article in the Daily Times edition of Sunday, March 2nd.  “Five steps to loving your job” was the title.  It was inspired by a book that I had received as a Christmas gift by Tom Rath entitled “How Full Is Your Bucket?”  The five steps as mentioned in the Daily Times article were: (1) Prevent Bucket Dipping, (2) Shine A Light On What Is Right, (3) Make Best Friends, (4) Give Unexpectedly, and (5) Reverse The Golden Rule.  The theory behind the five steps is that each of us has our own invisible bucket that is constantly being emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us.  When our bucket is full, we feel great.  When it’s empty, we feel awful.  We face choices every moment of every day; we can fill one another’s buckets with our invisible “dipper” by extending compliments, gratitude, and other rewards, or we can dip from each other’s bucket by extending negative or hurtful comments.

1.  To prevent bucket dipping, examine comments we are going to make to someone and measure their worth.  Are they positive or negative?  Refrain from “dipping” with negative comments.

2.  Look for positive things out of every interaction.  Shine a light on what is right, not dwell on the negative.

3.  Make a “best friend” at work.  Studies show that people with best friends at work have better safety records, receive higher customer satisfaction scores, and increase work-place productivity.  The book suggests making several or many best friends at work.

4.  Give little unexpected gifts to one another.  The element of receiving surprises never fades.  Some examples are, funny little trinkets, hugs (sometime little gifts that cost nothing are worth the most), offering to grab a cup of coffee, or sometimes just an unexpected smile.

5. The Golden Rule is the Golden Rule, and really what the book is suggesting is just a word variation that has a very similar meaning.  Instead of “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”; the revision is ‘do unto others as they would have you do unto them.”  Bucket filling is most meaningful when it is individualized.  Know what people want and do your best to surprise them with it.

Although the emphasis of the Times article was on work, as I read the book, I understood the principle is for our “non-work” times as well; home, church, shopping, anytime; all time.  How full is your bucket?  How full is the bucket of those you love and care for?  Let’s fill ‘em up!

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him.”

A tough thing to do!  Most of us want to “reason out” everything.  Faith in God however, encourages us to forgo our own reasoning and place our trust, or”faith”, in Him.  We must have faith in God in order to please Him.

Pray For Our Leaders

This is a presidential election year.  A crucial time in our nation that happens every four years.  Choosing a president for the next 4 years is not a task that should be taken lightly, especially in the times we are living in.  There are key issues to be considered, at home and abroad.  We in Maryland go to the polls this Tuesday to vote in the primary.  Others around the nation have already been or will soon go.  Make the effort to vote, both in the primary and general election on November 4th.

Scripture tells us in I Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1 & 2, to pray for our leaders.  “First of all, then, I admonish and urge that petitions, prayer, and intercessions, and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in positions of authority or high responsibility…” I Timothy 2:1-2 the Everyday Life Bible.

If we are to enjoy the blessings of good government, we must commit to pray for our government officials at all levels.

A Prayer for Presidential Selection:  Father, we thank you for the freedom to worship You in this great nation You have allowed us to live in.  We pray that You will continue to bless the United States of America.  As we go through the process of freedom to vote for a new president of our nation, we pray that the person selected will be a person of strong character, constantly seeking Your truth and guidance, always displaying courage and integrity, a person of insight and discernment who adores wisdom and understanding.  We thank You for granting this our request that we pray in Jesus name.  Amen.

Welcome 2008

Another year is here.  It seems like we were sending a welcome to 2007 just a fews days ago.  Time does fly by so.  Let us be sure we live the time we have following the teachings of the Lord from the Bible.  It's principles are so profound and yet so simple.  And they also work.  Life's teachings from the Bible are for everyday.  Today, and tomorrow.  Check out the Bible, the Book of John is a good place to start.  The Bible is a book of wisdom.  Get wisdom - Get understanding!
