8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” Exodus 20:8 NIV
When I was growing up there was a law that certain businesses, actually most businesses, could not be open on Sunday. They were called “Blue Laws”. I know it’s hard to imagine if you didn’t live during the time period, but only essential stores were open. Pressure from retailers mostly, influenced legislators to repeal the law, and the rest is history. Man’s law instead of God’s law now abounds. Individuals can still keep the day holy if we so choose, but for the most part, we live our lives as if God’s fourth commandment does not apply to us. I wonder what God thinks about that?
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. .” Exodus 20:9-11 NIV

7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.” Exodus 20:7
Number three of God’s Ten Commandments. God’s laws, given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, written on tablets of stone. (Exodus 31:18 NIV – “When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.”)
How loose we have become in using the Lord’s name in vain. Not just linked to a curse word as many do, but innocently spoken in exclamations or emphasis on something heard or seen. Perhaps we need to give ourselves a “whoops” when we catch ourselves doing it. God’s name should only be used in reverence in speaking about Him or to Him.

8All these are the beginning of sorrows. Matthew Chapter 24:7-8 KJV
We on the Eastcoast felt an unexpected event today, Tuesday 8/23/11. An earthquake! Wow. I did not think I would ever experience such an event in my lifetime, but I did. The scripture above is from a chapter that describes many signs of the return of Christ. Jesus gave many "signs", but I believe the most important sign is that we don't know when He will return, so always be ready. We should be assured that our lives are aligned with righteousness and that Jesus is the Lord of our life. We should accept the forgiveness of sin that He offers and resolve to do all we can to live a sinless life.

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:4-6
The second of God’s Ten Commandments.
Law two; no graven images of any kind. No cows, buddas, fish, - none. God is real. He lives in our heart when we accept the Son, Jesus Christ as Lord of our life. Materialistic statues are strictly against His law – law number 2. Once you accept Jesus as Lord, the void is filled and “statues” are not needed or desired.

“You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 NIV
The first of God’s Ten Commandments. God’s laws, given to Moses on Mt. Sinai, written on tablets of stone. (Exodus 31:18 NIV – “When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.”) Law one seems easy enough if you are Christian, but is it. It is so easy to find we have put “things” before the living God. What “things” can you think of that can slide right into our lives and become a god to us?
The Ten Commandments are God’s laws, given to us so that we may live in His will. But mere man has decided God’s law cannot be displayed in “man’s” court room, or in his public buildings, or in his schools (may God forgive us). Some foolishly teach that every man is a god and we can do whatever we want, without responsibility or accountability for our actions. Of course, mere man, is the tool of the evil one, who is bent on destroying those who believe God and accept His Son, Jesus Christ as our Savior. Weak men, no matter what their positions in life, are easy prey for the devil, and easily used by him for his own evil purpose. Be strong! Be wise! Be not deceived!
Next time – the second commandment. Do you know what it is?
